Project Impact:
Remake Learning grants catalyze new and innovative learning projects, both in-school and out-of-school, to support network members as they build, create, and imagine innovative learning practices and environments throughout southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.
One hundred ninety applicants submitted for the chance to be selected as one of sixteen cohort members receiving a $50,000 grant from one of three local foundations. The $800,000 investment is the single most substantial investment in learning space design in Remake Learning's history.
In July 2019, the RAS Design Team kicked off the first of two Design Summits with the Remake Learning Network, cohort members, and Pittsburgh area architects. Three months later, in September, RAS led 75 educators through an in-depth review of the design process, including critical community-building aspects, and visioning exercises. Four RAS Design Teams were paired with cohort members in charrettes to create state-of-the-art approaches and strategies for the redevelopment of learning spaces. After the charrettes, local architects, with on-going assistance from RAS, started construction documents to build the sixteen projects.
Efforts to amplify the impact of the grants challenged cohort members to explore collaborative ways to use their redesigned spaces, including a design plan to create a hub for professional development and outreach to other organizations to share their knowledge and experiences.
